Thematic analysis of over 150 student survey responses from students who received direct financial support for course supplies, gas, nutrition support, loss of work for internship completion, and/or certification exam fees. reveals a multifaceted impact of direct support funding on their education, emotional well-being, and community engagement. In response to questions about success, students report that they are inherently faced with two options which both put them in situations of significant stress/not suitable learning conditions: not working while taking classes or working while taking classes. Survey results indicate that direct financial support provided to students not only supported immediate educational pursuits but also fostered a sense of support to counteract stress. Results also indicate direct funding could influence students' long-term engagement with the college.
As the Toolbelt Generation gains momentum with more youth considering a career in the trades, join Carl Sandburg College as they share on their journey in developing a work-based learning pilot designed to expose youth to manufacturing career pathways. This 16-week pilot, funded by the ICCB Trades School Grant, allows students to complete credit-bearing coursework, explore careers through group visits to local businesses, participate in a stipend-funded WBL experience at an industry partner site, and successfully earn a certificate of completion through Sandburg's 16-hour Employability Skills Academy.
The Galesburg Area Vocational Center has experienced exceptional growth over the past three years. This can be attributed to many things including high quality instructors, real world instruction and curriculum, and exceptional CTE opportunities we offer to our students. In addition, there has been a heavy focus on intentional recruiting and marketing of all of our programs. In this session, we will tell the GAVC story and how that relates to the growth we are experiencing as an Area Vocational Center. This session will also focus on recruiting and marketing techniques for our CTE programs.
